1What percentage of coal currently makes up Morocco’s energy mix?

Currently, coal remains the predominant source in Morocco’s electricity mix, accounting for approximately 60% of electricity generation in 2025. However, this share has been gradually declining (64% in 2023 and over 70% in 2022), reflecting an ongoing energy transition. When considering all thermal sources (coal, gas, and fuel oil), they represent around 73% of the total, while renewable energy accounts for approximately 27%.

2In this context, what is the role of hydropower?

Within this energy transition, hydropower constitutes one of the traditional pillars of renewable energy in Morocco, alongside solar and wind. Although its share is smaller compared to the latter, it remains an essential component of the renewable mix, contributing to the stability of the electricity system. Overall, renewable energies represent more than 40% of installed capacity in 2025, with a target of 52% by 2030.

3What other renewable energies are being developed?

Among the renewable energies under development, solar and wind stand out, having experienced significant growth in recent years. Landmark projects such as the Noor solar complex in Ouarzazate, one of the largest in the world, illustrate this ambition.Morocco is also strongly committed to the development of green hydrogen as a strategic vector for industrial transformation, aiming to become a key supplier of clean energy to Europe, attracting investments estimated between $10 and $30 billion over the next decade.

4Mining activity is vital to Morocco’s economy. Which minerals are currently most strategic?

Mining is a fundamental pillar of the Moroccan economy. Phosphate is undoubtedly the most strategic resource, with Morocco being one of the world’s leading producers. Through the OCP Group, this mineral plays a transversal role, supporting both exports (around 20%) and a significant share of GDP (approximately 5%). In addition to phosphate, other minerals such as lead, zinc, and silver are also relevant in the national mining sector.

“Water management in Morocco’s mining sector is part of a broader national strategy for water resilience.”

5Does Morocco have a sustainable mining sector?

Morocco has made significant progress toward more sustainable mining practices. In particular, the OCP Group has adopted an ambitious decarbonization strategy, with investments exceeding $13 billion through 2027, focused on the exclusive use of renewable energy, the production of green ammonia, and achieving carbon neutrality before 2040. This approach demonstrates a clear commitment to balancing economic growth with environmental sustainability..

6How would you define water management in Morocco’s mining sector?

Water management in Morocco’s mining sector is framed within a broader national strategy for water resilience. In response to increasing water stress, the country has developed innovative solutions such as desalination, with more than 15 plants in operation by 2025. These infrastructures ensure water supply for both urban and industrial uses, including mining, reducing pressure on conventional water resources and reinforcing the sector’s sustainability.

7Does tourism remain a key pillar of Morocco’s economy?

Although Morocco’s economy has undergone significant diversification in recent years—driven by industrial, energy, and export development—the tourism sector continues to play a key role, both in terms of economic growth and employment, as well as in the country’s international positioning. In 2025, Morocco welcomed nearly 20 million tourists, generating revenues exceeding $13 billion and consolidating its position as one of the most important tourist destinations in the Mediterranean and Africa.
